NxJ’er asks: Soy What?

Soy for men – My girlfriend is pretty much vegetarian so I eat a good amount of soy (beans, tofu, etc.) How much is too much? I don’t want to grow boobs.

I wound never say to completely avoid. Man-boobs are unfortunate, and in most cases, a genetic thing.  Or a side effect of medication.  I’ve only seen good research on the potential to reduce prostate cancer risk.  I think the only way you might grow a boob is if you eat soy all day every day. A moderate intake of it is not going to result in fertility problems or impotence.  Until a meta-analysis comes out, I’m sticking to that.

The only people I tell to be careful with soy products are women who have had breast cancer or have it in their families.

Bottom line: there haven’t been any demonstrated links between soy consumption and man boobs.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends eating 25 grams of soy protein daily — but in the food form versus supplements.  Experts do not think you can go overboard with 25 grams, which would be 1 cup of fresh soybeans, 1/3 cup of soy nuts, 3-1/2 cups of soy milk, or two soy burgers.  Beans and tofu are excellent plant-protein sources.
